The Digital Fāgogo Collective is a compilation of Samoan tales, fables, and history re-told in the English language. Our mission is to preserve and share fāgogo with the Samoan diaspora.

We recognize that as a result of Sāmoa’s rich oral history, multiple versions of the stories featured in this site exist. As such, we do not claim that the stories featured in this site are authoritative. As a collective we encourage variations of stories to be shared so that we might be able to have a deeper and broader understanding of our history and culture.

The Chicken Hidden in the Canoe ʻO le Tala o le Moa i le Vaʻa

Samoan children’s games are so fun, common games include pōpō manoʻo (a hand-slapping game), mūfoaʻi (Samoan checkers, where the object is to get rid of your pieces first), and sapo (a stone-tossing game), ʻeli le palai (“dig the yam,” a sort of cross between hide-and-seek and capture the flag), and ʻe te lulu ʻe te moa (“you owl, you chicken,” a far more raucous, unruly cousin of “duck, duck, goose”).

This tala (tale) is the backstory to the ʻe te lulu ʻe te moa game, courtesy of Vaisala village on the island of Savaiʻi.
